About the Bell
1 Bell
The Church of Southgate St Mary was built in 1958 by Braddock and Martin-Smith architects. When the church was built, the single bell was hung dead on a wooden beam fixed in a tower with a concrete roof.
St Mary's church has the tallest spire in Crawley.
The single bell was transferred from Chichester, St Peter the Less in 1958 when it was demolished.
Until 1861, St Peter the Less had 3 bells. In 1861, the treble and 2 bells were sold. The tenor was the only one remaining.
The bell is hung dead and electronically chimed but for many years, the wires were cut and the bell is no longer ringable.
Before, 12 and 12 rung ladders were needed to access the belfry.
It is unknown what the actual weight of it is but 4cwt has been given as an approximate. Recordings have not been taken of the bell, but a reasonable guess would be around C or D.
