About the Bell
1 Bell, 0-2-21 in F
Chelwood Gate has a small red brick chapel beside the main road. It was built as a chapel of ease around the time Danehill All Saints was built.
Chelwood Gate and Chelwood Common are 2 villages close to each other, located at the border of the Ashdown Forest. Both have small chapels containing a bell.
The chapel was extended in 2006 to contain a toilet and a kitchen. A bell turret was also added on top. The bell is hung in a wooden B Frame on ball bearings. It was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 2006 without canons and Simpson tuned to the key of F. The bell is hung for swing chime and bolted to a metal headstock. It's chimed by a metal lever using a red, white, and blue sallied rope.
Most modern bells are fitted with a system called a "Twiddle pin". It allows the bell to be adjusted easily if it becomes odd struck. Interestingly, this bell has one of these. The clapper is painted light grey and has a 2" flight.
It has a simple inscription around the waist reading: 20 [fig. WBF,1] 06 / WHITECHAPEL
A 13-rung ladder is required to access the belfry. This is through a loft hatch in the toilet. The bell is hung to your right as you go up. In the turret there is a wooden plank that a pulley is attached to.
A photo below shows a block connected to the rope to restrict how high the bell is rung. In the past, the bell appears to have struck the louvre.
The bell was in a fantastic condition when I visited.
